A Weekly Source of Community News & Opinion
4:20 pm est
As veterans of the newspaper business, our family is committed to bringing local news coverage and opinion to
readers in the underserved communities of inland San Diego County.
Editor and Publisher Derek Casady is the eldest son of Simon Casady, who published the El Cajon Valley
News from 1954 to 1964. A lifelong Democrat who ran for Congress in California's 52nd District in 2006, Derek has had
a diverse career. He was General Manager of the Valley News under his father, worked as a reporter and editor at the Los Angeles
Times and at Psychology Today magazine, founded the Mission Beach Free Clinic, and owned and managed Casady's Whole Foods
Market in Encinitas. Derek also worked for 10 years as the Administative Assistant to Senator Jim Mills, the President
Pro Tempore of the California State Senate. He and his wife, Nancy, have five children and four grandchildren.
The re-emergence of The El Cajon Valley News, serving the inland San Diego County communities of La Mesa, El Cajon, Lakeside
and Santee, marks the Casady family's re-entry into the newspaper business at a time when large, metropolitan dailies
are struggling and small, weekly community papers are flourishing.
